2D Game Development

Summer Intensive

Game Academy is an award-winning, three-level game design and computer science program for high school students looking for college preparatory STEM opportunities. 

In our accelerated summer program, you will complete the entire first course of the program2D Game Developmentwithin six weeks.  This makes it possible for you to skip ahead to the 3D Game Development course in the fall. 

You will code and design your first video game prototype using Unity3D—an interactive media engine used widely within the game industry. Coursework includes C# programming with Unity3D, 2D pixel art and sprite animation, digital music and sound FX, and narrative writing.

Pre-requisites:

No previous experience in programming, art, music or narrative writing required – but must have a strong interest to learn!

Schedule:

  • 6 weeks (July 7-Aug 15, 2025)
  • Monday-Friday, 10am-5pm

Options:

  • In-Person: At the Urban Arts Learning Lab
  • Remote: Through our Discord server

Eligibility

  • Students entering 10th, 11th or 12th grade in Fall 2025
  • Students looking for a fun, accelerated computer science course that will prepare you to apply for creative tech and/or STEM college programs.

Course Map

Unity & C# Coding

Each class day starts with a coding lesson.  Replicate, modify and create mini-games to learn the fundamentals.

Each week focuses on a unique art form:

  1. Game design & theory
  2. Narrative & storytelling
  3. Pixel art & animation
  4. Music & Sound FX

Final Project

In week 5, you will finish a personal game project–on your own. 

The final week is a Game Jam to create a new game in a team.
